Forever Chemicals Found In Over Half Of Scottish Water Samples

New data has revealed that potentially toxic forever chemicals that are linked to cancer have been found in more than half of samples of Scottish drinking water that were taken in 2023.

This data was obtained by The Ferrett, which reported that per-and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) were identified in 349 of the 631 samples taken by Scottish Water at drinking water sources last year, in what was the publicly-owned supplier’s first annual survey for the chemicals.

Forever chemicals, and in particular PFAS, have attracted attention in recent years due to their omnipresent nature. These chemicals are used in a wide variety of industrial applications, from non-stick cookware to waterproof fabrics, and their unique chemical structure means they possess remarkable resistance to natural breakdown processes.

Studies suggest a potential link between PFAS exposure and adverse health effects, including developmental issues, immune system disruption and an increased risk of some types of cancers.

According to the Ferret report, none of the samples showed levels of PFAS that would require the supplier to take action. However, with recent studies suggesting that for some of the PFAS found in our drinking water there is no safe level to consume, it may be time to review these regulations.

Choosing The Right Supplier

The good news is many water companies are trying to reduce these chemicals in our water supplies, although, judging by these samples taken by Scottish Water, it’s clear that more needs to be done north of the border.
